Akron Falls Park

Visited February 21, 2022

Park Entrance: I used Google Maps: Akron Falls Park, 44 Parkview Drive, Akron, New Yoek 14001

41-51 degrees Fahrenheit, sunshine, no wind, 9:47 AM-10:50 AM

Restrooms across the bridge from the lower parking we used was closed for the season.

Noted on website: "Dogs: Must be licensed and kept on leash no longer than 7 feet at ALL TIMES (this includes at your shelter or campsite). YOU MUST CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG. Dogs are not allowed on county beaches."

I visited this beautiful place with my friend, Melissa, because we just had to get out to enjoy the sunshine and unseasonably warm weather today. Our walk was 1.5 miles. All Trails describes the elevation gain as 66 feet for this trail. We were there for about an hour because we stopped to chat and visit while enjoying the trail.

The trail varied in width but most areas allowed us to walk side by side. The trail had a slight incline with one sharp incline as we neared the falls. There were muddy sections which is why we chose not to wear snow shoes but the sharp incline was icy and I would have liked the purchase power of the snow shoes for that section.

We shared the lot with one vehicles when we arrived and there were four other vehicles in the small lot we used during our visit. It was the first lot on the left that had a wide trail sloping down to a bridge. From the trail we observed what must be another lot past where parked that would resulted in a shorter walk to the falls involving a decline rather than an incline to the falls. That trail was glazed because of high traffic so we did not explore it today.

There was some trash along the trails, a dog poo bag and drink containers which were tucked into hollows of fence posts and hollow trunks.

No mosquitos were awake today.

Parking: More than one lot.

No entrance or parking fee.

We heard a few birds and saw a blue jay, nuthatch, and woodpeckers. There were mosses and a variety of tree species including beech, maple, and oaks. The website details the variety of flora and fauna at this park.

Path right by where we parked. Slight incline down to bridge. Path to falls is to the right (before the bridge) and a restroom facility is on the right (after the bridge) but is closed during the winter month.

Started the trail

Murder Creek was loud today. It was nice to hear moving water.

First "falls" to the right of the trail

One of the wet area we crossed to stay on the path

Mossy rocks were pretty. Always nice to see green this time of year.

Second of the "falls" on the right of the trail

The ice hanging off the tree across the creek reminded me of the fluffy white hair on Clydesdale horses.

Murder Creek was beautiful today.

No Swimming Sign: Not a problem for us today but I imagine that the water is inviting during the hot, muggy days of July.

View upstream (to the right of the bridge)

Water is high in the banks compared to summer time.

View downstream (to the left of the bridge)

Restrooms on the back side of this building, but closed today

Closed sign

Wintering Gypsy moths and last year's chrysalis casings...too high for me to scrape them off. Hoping the recent cold temperatures slow them down from creating the damage they did Summer 2021.
