Hunters Creek Park

Hunters Creek Upper Parking, Centerline Road, East Aurora, NY 14052

The unpaved parking will accommodate 10+ cars, depending on how they park. No cost for parking.

68-75 degrees Fahrenheit, sunny 12:45 PM - 2:05 PM

On this Monday afternoon, there were 7 vehicles at 12:45 PM and 5 vehicles at 2:05 PM.

Leashed dogs are welcome at this site.

I did not see any toilet facilities at this parking site on or the trails leading to the creek.

I would allow two hours or more if you want to hike the trails on both sides of the creek. I planned on a shorter outing today because Wesley and I were testing a cooling jacket to see if that helped him feel better on his hike and I did not want him to over do. We logged 2.78 miles total. The trails we used were single file. We used the red trails and chanced upon the Sergeant Mark Trail for part of the walk. We landed on the Hunters Creek Trail a few times. Because I was there to find a specific spot for the WNY Hiking Challenge, I was glad to have Avenza maps through the WNY Challenge because it was easy for me to be on a well-established trail and not be where I thought I was at this park. If I was just wandering to enjoy the trails, it was easy to keep the creek on my right side on the way to the creek and keep the creek on my left as I returned to parking. The creek was beautiful and Wesley really enjoyed it.

I prefer long pants for wooded trails.

I passed only one family with a young lad wearing his "adventuring hat" and one lady with her very obedient dog. Seeing the family and talking to them about the "adventuring hat" as they said hi to Wesley really made my day and brought back many happy memories of hiking and geocaching adventures with our daughter who is now grown up.

I wore long pants and bug spray; the mosquitos were not too bothersome today.

A note about trash: when we visited in 2007, there was evidence of partying bonfires with trash and broken glass. There were at least 20 doggie poo bags decorating the trails nearest the parking area. Today, I saw only an abandoned article of clothing. There seems to have been an obvious clean up effort and it resulted in much more beautiful, peaceful experience for Wesley and me.

Wesley and I saw many trees and plants at this beautiful, peaceful place. I saw mosses, ferns, and grapevine. The only poison ivy we saw was within a half mile of parking and closer to the creekbank. There were birch, beech, oak, maple, cherry, and hemlock trees. Many mushrooms and fungi were flourishing due to the past two weeks of rain and the warm weather.

The trails are part of the WNY Summer 2021 Hiking Challenge. https://outsidechronicles.com/challenge

This is a great park for geocaching. To learn more about geocaching, visit www.geocaching.com.

[My last visit June 2007]

June 2007: Saw two tiny sleeping owls in a tree right by the path by the parking area. (not a great quality photo, sorry)

Pink Trail (Hunters Creek Trail) upon leaving the parking lot.

There are few areas with steep drop offs near the trail.

This bridge is getting old. Use care.

A bridge made of a half-tree log.

There is an easier crossing just to the left.

Oriole Nest?

Wesley sporting his new cooling jacket. It seemed to work as advertised. We will try it again on our next hike.

The trail picks up across the creek in the center of this image and will take you to the other parking. I did not do this section of trail today.

One of the trail "log crossing" features.

This park is often used by mountain bikers. When I first visited in 2007 on a Saturday, there were many bicyclists. Today on a Monday, I did not see one.

There were only a few muddy sections on the trail today as shown in this picture.

Cool mossy tree bases and roots

First goldenrod that I have seen in bloom this season.
