Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge

Visited August 20, 2021

Google Maps brought me to Casey Road, Basom, NY, the DEC headquarters. I continued on, turned right, and parked on the right on Route 77 at the parking by the barn shown in the pictures below. This refuge is in Genesee and Orleans counties. The trail I went on was in Genesee county.

83 degrees Fahrenheit 1:40 PM - 2:10 PM, muggy

Portapotties available at the parking area

Dogs on leash are welcome. Come prepared to pick up after your dog. Wesley stayed home because of the anticipated heat and miles I was planning for the day.

I would allow an hour or more to explore. The Kanyoo Trail Blue Loop was 1.25 miles of easy terrain. I would love to visit it again during bird migration when it is cooler with less mosquitos but I imagine it will be more busy then. Today, I saw three people here with fancy cameras and giant lenses.

I wore long pants but shorts would have been okay since I stayed on the trail.

The dirt trails allowed space for two people to easily pass. I only passed four people the entire time I was hiking. One was leaving as I arrived and one was arriving as I exited the trail.

Mosquitos were vicious and persistent in the muggy weather despite the long pants, hat, and reapplications of bug spray which was why I did not tarry here.

No cost for parking.

Parking: Dirt lot on Route 77. I passed other small parking areas on the way to the lot I used and when I was leaving the area.

While on the trail, I saw robins and big white birds that I am unfamiliar with (they were not herons). I saw staghorn sumac, cherry, maple, tulip trees, and oak trees, poison ivy, Queen Anne's lace, Virginia creeper, jewel weed, and cat tails.

I went right here to follow the trail to the boardwalk in a clockwise loop.

Information signs about local wildlife were along the trail.
